Wire Transfers Overview

Wire transfers are the fastest and most secure method for moving high-value funds between banks. Unlike ACH payments, which process in batches, wire transfers settle individually and irrevocably on the same business day. Eastern Business Banking® provides full wire transfer capabilities for both domestic and international transactions.

Domestic Wire Transfers

Domestic wire transfers move funds between banks within the United States. They are processed through the Federal Reserve's Fedwire system and typically settle within hours of submission.

Required Information for Domestic Wires

How to Send a Domestic Wire

  1. Log in to Eastern Business Banking
  2. Navigate to Payments → Wire Payments → New Wire
  3. Select "Domestic" as the wire type
  4. Choose the funding account (your Eastern Bank business checking)
  5. Add or select a recipient from your wire payee list
  6. Enter the transfer amount
  7. Review the wire fee disclosure
  8. Select the send date (today or future-dated)
  9. Review all details for accuracy
  10. Submit the wire (or save as draft for later submission)
Domestic wire transfers submitted before 4:00 PM ET are processed the same business day. Wires submitted after the cut-off will be processed on the next business day.

International Wire Transfers

International wire transfers use the SWIFT network to send funds to banks outside the United States. Eastern Bank supports both USD-denominated and foreign currency international wires.

Required Information for International Wires

For foreign currency wires, the exchange rate is locked at the time of submission. This protects you from currency fluctuations between submission and settlement. USD wires leave the conversion to the receiving bank, which may apply less favorable rates.

Need to Make an ACH Payment Instead?

ACH is more cost-effective for non-urgent payments.

Wire Transfer Security

Wire transfers are irrevocable once processed. Eastern Bank implements several security measures to protect your business:

Dual Approval

Eastern Business Banking supports dual approval for wire transfers. The account administrator can configure dollar thresholds above which a second user must approve the wire before it is submitted for processing.

Wire Verification Call-Back

For high-value wires or new wire recipients, Eastern Bank may require a verification call-back to a pre-authorized phone number on file. This prevents unauthorized wire transfers even if a user's credentials are compromised.

Wire Entitlements

User permissions can be configured to restrict who can create, approve, and submit wire transfers. Users without wire entitlements cannot access the wire payment module.

Tracking Wire Transfers

After submitting a wire transfer through Eastern Business Banking, you can track its status:

For domestic wires, the Federal Reference Number (IMAD/OMAD) can be used to trace the transfer through the Federal Reserve. Contact the Business Service Team at 1-800-333-8000 for wire tracing assistance.

Saving Wire Templates

If you frequently send wires to the same recipient, you can save wire templates to speed up future transfers:

  1. After entering wire details, click "Save as Template"
  2. Give the template a descriptive name (e.g., "Vendor ABC Monthly Wire")
  3. For future wires, select the template and only update the amount and date

Templates store recipient information but not amounts or dates, ensuring each wire is reviewed individually.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a domestic wire transfer take?
Domestic wire transfers submitted before 4:00 PM ET are processed the same business day and typically arrive at the receiving bank within a few hours. However, the receiving bank's own processing times determine when funds are available to the recipient.
Can I cancel a wire transfer after submitting it?
Wire transfers are irrevocable once processed. If you need to cancel a wire, contact the Business Service Team at 1-800-333-8000 immediately. If the wire hasn't been processed yet (still in "Submitted" or "Approved" status), it may be possible to cancel. Once the wire is "Processed," cancellation is not possible.
What is a SWIFT code and where do I find it?
A SWIFT code (also called BIC code) is an 8 or 11 character international bank identifier. The recipient can find their bank's SWIFT code on their bank's website, bank statement, or by contacting their bank directly. Eastern Bank's SWIFT code is available by contacting the Business Service Team.
Why was my international wire returned?
Common reasons for returned international wires include incorrect IBAN or account number, mismatched beneficiary name, missing intermediary bank information, or compliance holds. Review the return reason in your wire history and contact the Business Service Team for assistance in re-submitting the wire correctly.
